RMIF warns of garages’ demise

The Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMIF) has warned just 6,800 petrol garages will remain in five years.

These will comprise supermarket garages and those owned by small operators. The latter have about 8,000 garages, down from 21,000 two decades ago. The RMIF hopes the Office of Fair Trading inquiry into petrol and diesel prices at the pump will support members’ view that unfair and predatory pricing by the supermarkets and some major oil companies is making it impossible for them to compete. Supermarkets insist the market is working competitively and effectively.
