Rochdale hotel deal collapses

Wilson Bowden Developments has begun a search for a new hotel operator at its Kingsway business park in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, after
year-long talks with Richard Balfour-Lynn’s Alternative Hotel Group collapsed.

The developer – which is being sold by its parent, Barratt – said that it had “suspended negotiations” with AHG over plans to open a 120-bedroom hotel at the 420-acre business park. It cited “delays and third-party issues” at AHG.

Construction of the property, which was to be operated as a Village hotel, was scheduled to begin in January. It was expected to be open by the
end of the year. Work has yet to start.

WBD development director Robert Grafton said: “Interest from hotel and leisure operators across the spectrum remains strong, and we have not ruled out the possibility of AHG resolving its third-party issues in the near future.”

Meanwhile, Co-operative Food is eyeing Kingsway for its 400,000 sq ft northern distribution hub.

Strutt & Parker is advising the Co-op; Jones Lang LaSalle and p3 Property Consultants are letting agents at Kingsway.
