Havering council and supermarket chain Morrisons have completed a land swap that could create a new leisure centre in Romford, Essex.
A 75,000 sq ft Morrisons foodstore and around 65 residential homes are set to be built at the site of the Romford Ice Arena on Rom Valley Way. Both proposals will be subject to planning permission.
The leisure development features a new competition-size ice rink, an eight-lane swimming pool, a training pool, a fitness suite with studio and spa facilities and a restaurant.
The proposals form part of Morrisons’ expansion strategy in London and the South East and its ambition to open more than 2.5m sq ft over the next three years across the country.
Councillor Michael White said: “This is a landmark deal for Romford that will lead to the creation of a fantastic new leisure centre for the town. It marks the culmination of years of work to get the right deal for local people. The centre will offer something for everyone, whether you want to skate, swim or just go for a cup of tea.”
