Rover’s German parent company BMW said it was seeking government help to keep its Longbridge factory near Birmingham open. The future of the car plant, which makes the Mini and MGF sports car as well as Rover models, has been in doubt for some time. Meanwhile, researchers have been estimating the high cost to the local economy of the factory’s possible closure.
