Royal Mail examines Nine Elms sale

Royal-Mail.jpegRoyal Mail has begun approaching investors over the potential sale of its giant South London Mail Centre in Nine Elms, SW8.

The 14-acre site has consent for 1,870 flats and over 50,000 sq ft of shops and community facilities, as well as a new primary school.

The 2012 consent also includes 15% affordable housing.

A statement from Royal Mail said documentation would be issued to interested parties with a decision on how to proceed following a review of all the options and submissions received.

It is expected to result in either an outright sale or a joint venture with a development partner.

The site is located in the Mayor of London’s designated Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area.

The South London Mail Centre closed in 2012 with mail processing transferring to other Royal Mail sites in Greater London.

The site currently houses the delivery office for the SW1, SW3 and SW7 postcodes, which under current plans will move to a new site in Pensbury Street, SW8, in 2017, with arrangements put in place for Royal Mail to have continued use of the existing facility in the interim.

Martin Gafsen, group property director, Royal Mail Group, said: “Nine Elms is a key area of regeneration in London and we look forward to our former mail centre site being part of a thriving, revitalised area.”

Savills and Rothschild are advising on the future of the site.
