Royston Leigh tipped to triumph in Truro battle

Marks & Spencer is to submit an application for a 9,290 sq m (100,000 sq ft) store on Lemon Quay, Truro.

The move will bring to a head a 12-year battle for a new shopping development in the town.

Along with M&S, developer Royston Leigh’s scheme will contain a 4,645 sq m (50,000 sq ft) shop on two floors, a 650-space multistorey car park and a bus station.

Royston Leigh has resolved land assembly problems and Hillier Parker has backed the scheme in its recommendations to Carrick district council. The council meets at the end of the month to finalise its city-centre retail policy and is expected to give the nod to Lemon Quay.

Longwood Estates’ 23,968 sq m (258,000 sq ft) shopping scheme, at the other end of Truro’s prime pitch at the top of Pydar Street, has received powerful backing from Sainsbury’s. The retailer became a joint development partner by purchasing the principal building on the scheme, St Clement House, believed to have cost £1.5m.

The third proposed scheme in the town is London & Amsterdam’s 18,580 sq m (200,000 sq ft) Opes shopping centre.
