A former pleasure palace on the Isle of Rum is up for grabs after 60 years in public ownership.
Kinloch Castle was built by aristocratic playboy Sir George Bullough in 1900 as a playground for highland sports enthusiasts who also enjoyed decadent high society parties.
The two-storey, turreted, red sandstone, 1,200m2 property is set within seven acres of woodland and fields on the Inner Hebrides island, and has been owned by Scotland’s nature agency since 1957.
The rooms are still furnished as they were when Sir John Betjeman described it as “an undisturbed example of pre-1914 opulence”, but sadly the leaks, woodworm, dry rot and damp have forced NatureScot to put the castle on the market.
No price has been disclosed, but renovation works alone are expected to cost £20m.
