The problem of homelessness in rural communities is largely hidden, with people sleeping in barns and outhouses, according to a report by the Institute for Public Policy Research.

Between 2010 and 2016, there was a 32% rise in the number of people sleeping rough in mainly rural local authority areas. The increase in areas deemed largely rural was 52%.

Some 6,270 families across England’s 91 mainly rural local authority areas were classified as unintentionally homeless last year.
