Scottish & Newcastle (S&N) is to anchor a £7.5m hotel and leisure complex, planned for four prime acres of Cardiff Bay.
South Wales-based Brunswick and Broadhall have joined forces to develop the Queensgate South site, which borders the Atlantic Wharf UCI complex and Cardiff County Hall. S&N will run an 85-bed Premier Lodge hotel at the scheme.
Brunswick and Broadhall said talks were at an advanced stage for two drive-thrus and that an unnamed operator was poised to sign for a 2,322 sq m (25,000 sq ft) fitness and leisure club. The scheme will have more than 200 parking places, while a dock feeder canal running through the site will remain.
“We are excited to be putting in place another piece of the Cardiff Bay jigsaw,” said Broadhall director Elizabeth Fathi. “This is a quality development in a vibrant location, and we are looking forward to seeing it take shape when work starts later this year.”
Brunswick development director Roger Dean added: “The commitment in advance from a leading national hotel operator is a major factor in ensuring the success of the project.”
Work is expected to be completed by November next year.
The site was sold by Associated British Ports subsidiary Grosvenor Waterside, with Cooke & Arkwright and Healey & Baker acting as joint agents. Joint agents for the development, drawn up by HLN Architects, are EJ Hales and Hutchings & Thomas.
The joint venture between Brunswick Developments and Broadhall will trade as Brunswick (Queensgate).
