Sadiq Khan, the Labour mayoral candidate for London, has proposed a 50% affordable homes target for the capital.
Launching his vision for London during a speech in Isleworth, he pledged to “fix the Tory housing crisis” with a series of measures that included creating a “new team” dedicated to building “genuinely affordable homes to buy and rent”, bringing forward public land, seeking additional funding and working with councils and private developers.
He did not explain how he would define an “affordable home”.
However, he said he would introduce new “London Living Rent” homes linked to a third of local average income, a London-wide letting agency, and would take tougher action against rogue landlords and push for powers over the rental sector.
The Tooting MP pledged to protect the green belt – with new homes being built on brownfield land instead of the green belt.
He also said he would give Londoners “first dibs” on new shared ownership homes.
Khan said: “London is the greatest city in the world, but we’re at a crossroads. Londoners are being priced out of our city altogether, and the next generation are missing out on the opportunities that our city gave me. If we don’t act now, it could be too late.”
