Safeway loses out in Leicester appeal

Safeway has failed to gain the High Court’s permission to challenge plans for the redevelopment of a former power station at Leicester.

Safeway claims that a scheme put forward by Powergen, which includes a Morrisons supermarket, would damage the viability of other stores and the vitality of the city centre.

In the latest of a number of recent “out-of-town v town centre” retail development disputes, Safeway argued that Powergens plans were at odds with the local plan.

Leicester city council gave consent for an 7,700 sq m (83,000 sq ft) superstore, petrol filling station and car wash with 585 parking spaces.

Safeway’s application for leave to challenge the grant of consent has been refused.
