Safeway is to open up to 70 hypermarkets by extending existing stores.
It intends to have 25 of the 4,645 sq m (50,000 sq ft)-plus outlets over the next two years.
It already has planning permission to extend its stores by a total of 1,765 sq m (19,000 sq ft). Two will open in the first half of next year and another five or six over the year. It plans to add about 18,580 sq m (200,000 sq ft) annually, mostly through extensions. It will also convert 50 outlets into convenience stores at the smaller end of its portfolio.
