Sainsbury’s beats Tesco to get Whitby store go-ahead

Sainsbury’s has won a head-to-head battle with Tesco to open a new foodstore at Whitby, North Yorkshire.

The supermarket chain has been granted planning permission for a 30,000 sq ft store on Stainsacre Lane.

Both Sainsbury’s and Tesco submitted planning applications for a new store to Scarborough Borough Council’s planning committee.

It recommended that both Sainsbury’s and Tesco be rejected, but councillors overturned their officer’s recommendation and gave Sainsbury’s the green light.

Jo Try, regional development surveyor at Sainsbury’s, said: “This is probably the biggest planning decision that Whitby has seen for some years and we’re glad to be a part of it. This is a great result for Sainsbury’s and for Whitby, as many people currently travel to Scarborough, Teesside and even York to do their food shopping.”
