Sainsbury to develop new supermarket in Halifax town centre

Sainsbury’s has won the tender to develop a 3,158.6 sq m (34,000 sq ft) supermarket in Halifax, West Yorkshire. The site is bounded by Wade Street and Charlestown Road and is adjacent to the North Bridge Leisure Centre. Calderdale Council owns the freehold while Thornedale Developments owns the long leasehold.

In addition to the foodstore, Sainsbury’s is to build a 420-space car park and a petrol station. The retailer will also develop a minimum of 300 parking spaces for public use next to the North Bridge centre.

A detailed application will be submitted within three weeks. If all goes as planned, clearance of the site will begin in October. The store is scheduled to open in early 1998.

Hill Woodhouse acted for Sainsbury’s.
