Sainsbury’s is planning to cash in on a new London Crossrail station and London’s sky-high residential values with a redevelopment of its Whitechapel supermarket to create 620 flats.
The retailer has submitted a scoping report for a major scheme to Tower Hamlets proposing the development of nine buildings of up to 33 storeys.
The plans include a new circa 60,000 sq ft supermarket to replace the existing store at 1 Cambridge Heath Road, E1.
The 4.7-acre site, which is bounded by Brady Street to the west, Merceron Street to the north, Darling Row to the north-east and Cambridge Heath Road to the south-east, is located next to the Whitechapel Crossrail station, which is under construction.
Detailed proposals are being worked up by Unit Architects.
A full planning application is expected next year, but any redevelopment work will not take place until the completion of the Crossrail station.
Turley Associates is advising on planning.
