Sajid Javid to run DCLG in cabinet shake-up

Sajid_JavidSajid Javid has been appointed as the new secretary of state for the Department for Communities and Local Government as part of prime minister Theresa May’s cabinet reshuffle.

The former business secretary will now be responsible for driving up housing supply, increasing home ownership and devolving powers and budgets to boost local growth in England.

He replaces Greg Clark who will take on the role of secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, a new position.

The role suggests a merger of the business and climate change departments.

Housing minister Brandon Lewis, tipped for a cabinet post, has yet to be rewarded. A number 10 spokesperson would not comment on Lewis’ future role and said announcements were ongoing.

Chris Grayling has been promoted to secretary of state for transport.

The former justice secretary’s responsibilities will include setting the strategic direction for the rail industry and providing policy, guidance and funding to English local authorities to help them maintain road networks and develop new major transport schemes.
