Sales at John Lewis fall

Sales at John Lewis department stores fell 2.4% on the year to £160.6 million in the last full week before Christmas, with sales of electrical items down 11%.

The company called the decline a “sign of the growing significance of Black Friday,” which brought sales forward, but said stores were ready for “a very busy” final trading day before Christmas.

Figures from Ipsos Retail Performance showed non-food stores attracted 1.8% fewer shoppers in the week beginning Dec. 14 compared with a year earlier.
