Sales rise at Whitbread

Costa and Premier Inn owner Whitbread has reported sales growth of 7.6% for the 13 weeks to 1 June.

Overall the firm posted a 2.9% rise in like-for-like sales for the first quarter of the year. This was driven mainly by the Premier Inn hotel chain, which reported sales growth of 9.2%, boosted by the 9,000 bedrooms it has added in the past two years.

Like-for-like sales at coffee shop chain Costa rose by 1.1% during the period, down from 2.6% in the equivalent period 2016.

The group remains on track to open an additional 4,200 bedrooms in the UK this year and it completed the sale and leaseback of its 247-bedroom hotel in Shoreditch, N1, which raised £51m.

It is also looking to open a further 230-250 Costa coffee shops.
