The former home of the UK’s largest asylum will come to market through Jones Lang LaSalle this week.
The Old Manor Hospital, Salisbury, Wiltshire, is to be sold for redevelopment by NHS Wiltshire.
The 6.26 acre site, which has been vacant for more than a decade, was once home to the Fisherton House Lunatic Asylum, which dates back to the 1800s.
It grew into the largest private mental hospital in England before being taken over by the NHS in 1954.
Situated in a conservation area, the land for sale, known as the Main Site and the Laundry Site, features two Grade II listed buildings and a listed fountain dating from the 1850s.
The site is being marketed for a range of development uses including healthcare, residential and leisure.
The site is located to the west of Salisbury city centre, adjacent to Wilton Road (A36), one of the city’s principal transport routes.
John Mulholland of Jones Lang LaSalle said: “The development of the new Doctors’ Surgery and earlier redevelopment of the courts has already made great headway to regenerate this area. We will now market the undeveloped land to potential buyers and begin the next phase of transformation.
“With the site’s history we expect a lot of interest from the healthcare and social care sectors looking to develop new care homes and extra care facilities. As the site is located adjacent to one of the city’s main transport routes we also expect interest from residential developers and those looking at sites with roadside potential. The key will be finding a prospective purchaser with experience of dealing with major development projects to ensure sympathetic restoration of the listed buildings, particularly Finch House which is so visible at the key gateway to the town.”
