Sama unveils revised plans for Birmingham PBSA scheme

Developer and investor Sama Investments has launched a public consultation for plans to develop a 50-storey purpose-built student accommodation scheme in Birmingham.

The proposals pertain to Birmingham City Council’s previous office building at 1 Lancaster Circus.

They include developing two landmark towers, including one of up to 50-storeys, which will act as a focal point for the area, on the edge of Lancaster Circus Queensway and Lawson Street.

Sama had initially launched a consultation in April 2023 to develop a 64-storey PBSA tower on the site, but the scale of the building has since been revised.

The proposals are intended to support the continued growth of nearby universities, as both Aston and Birmingham City University are located nearby.

Sama wants the development to be a new gateway from the Gun Quarter and Jewellery Quarter into Birmingham City Centre.

The scheme includes outdoor courtyards and public open space, including a landscaped pedestrian corridor supporting extensive biodiverse planting.

Bilal Ahmed, executive chairman and founder at Sama Investments, said: “Our proposals for 1 Lancaster Circus will transform this underutilised site to deliver a flagship scheme that will create a new gateway into Birmingham, while also supporting the wider regeneration of the area.

“We will deliver much-needed student accommodation to support the vibrancy of our growing universities in Birmingham.”
