Scheme awakens Brum’s Chinatown

Plans for a scheme that will kickstart the redevelopment of Birmingham’s 26-acre wholesale market area have won consent. Irish developers Gallan Group and Cornerstone Property have the go-ahead for a 196,000 sq ft mixed-use development on Upper Dean Street in the city’s Chinatown. The scheme, which Gallan said would link the prime retail pitch around the Bullring with the wholesale markets and the wider Digbeth area, will comprise a 210-bedroom Sleep Inn hotel, 191 flats in two blocks, and 25,000 sq ft of shops and offices.
