Science firm to create ‘medicine campus’ at Manchester’s City Labs

Qiagen, a Netherlands-based life sciences firm, has agreed to lease Manchester Science Partnership’s 92,000 sq ft City Labs 2.0 to create a precision medicine campus in the city.

The firm is working with Health Innovation Manchester, a partnership between the NHS, Manchester’s universities and the medical industry, to create a development to attract a cluster of life science firms to the city.

Manchester City Council approved an investment of £21m yesterday to support the development, which it said would create up to 1,500 jobs and add £150m to the city’s economy in the next decade.

City Labs 2.0 and the neighbouring City Labs 3.0 are a £60m 220,000 sq ft office and laboratory development by Bruntwood, MSP’s majority shareholder, in a joint venture with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Speaking of the council’s investment, Tom Renn, managing director of Manchester Science Partnerships, said: “This is a huge investment in Manchester and our City Labs campus will provide the facilities and growth support for world-leading clinical care, research and innovation to flourish.

“Undoubtedly this will be the biggest deal of the year for the sector in the city.”
