Scotland sets out Airbnb licence plans

Properties being used for Airbnb and other forms of short-term lets in Scotland will need licences from councils under new plans.

The Scottish government wants to tackle the growth of Airbnb-style rentals in tourist areas such as Edinburgh and will ask individual authorities to set the requirements for granting a permit while allowing uncapped fees to cover the costs.

Local authorities will have to devise a licensing system for short-term rental properties by next October, with all operators then required to apply for a licence by 1 July 2024.

Existing Airbnb hosts and landlords of short-term rentals will have to obtain a licence by April 2023.
