Scotland urged to follow England’s lead on property taxes

Politicians in Scotland are being urged to follow England by cutting property taxes.

In England, Jeremy Hunt may be ending the stamp duty tax reduction earlier than planned, but it will still be in place until March 2025.

Anyone buying property in Scotland currently pays the separate Land and Buildings Transaction Tax. That begins with a 2% charge for transactions of £145,000 before rising to 5% on sales between £250,001 and £325,000.

From £325,001 through to £750,000 there is a 10% tax, with 12% on any domestic property sold for more than £750,001.

The industry has urged Holyrood to cut the tax, or risk Scotland appearing “overpriced”.
