Scottish regeneration projects have scooped five of eight best practice awards granted by the British Urban Regeneration Association (BURA).
Among the winners are a 292,000 sq ft Grade A office scheme at Glasgow’s City Park and a regeneration scheme in Ardler village, Dundee.
Two projects in England and one in Northern Ireland were also recognised in the awards, which will be presented in a ceremony at the Cumberland-Guoman Hotel, London W1, on 29 November.
BURA chief executive Jon Ladd said it was the first time sponsors from all four countries had been involved.
The sponsors include English Partnerships, Scottish Enterprise, the Welsh Assembly Government and the Department for Social Development in Northern Ireland.
“The close involvement of these key organisations from across the UK represents a firm commitment to learning from UK transnational best practice,” he said.
The winning entries are:
● Ardler Village, Dundee: the transformation of a peripheral housing estate;
● City Park, Glasgow: the formerly derelict cigarette factory is now a Grade A office complex with tenants including Dell and Halcrow;
● Crichton Regeneration Project, Dumfries: a historic legacy of buildings have been transformed into an academic campus, business park and conference/tourist facility;
● Former Sheriff Court, Glasgow: a mixed-use scheme that includes a new theatre;
● Holyrood Urban Regeneration Project, Edinburgh: the regeneration of 10 acres of semi-derelict land in the Canongate area;
● Phoenix Initiative, Coventry: a public realm-led project that has restitched run-down parts of the city;
● Staircase House/Shawcross Fold, Stockport: the refurbishment of almost derelict properties and empty sites into an attractive new quarter for Stockport;
● Drapers’ Towns Partnership, Northern Ireland: two community organisations in Draperstown and Moneymore, mid-Ulster, overcame Catholic and Protestant divides to regenerate both towns.
This week, BURA also launched a “Back a Winner” campaign to provide continued support to the winners of the best practice awards.
