Older people should be given stamp duty exemptions and government-backed loans to help them to move into retirement homes.
The government’s proposed “Help to Move” scheme would ease the process for pensioners to move into retirement homes by helping them to get mortgages, according to a group of MPs and peers, which added that homes worth less than £250,000 should also be exempt from stamp duty.
The all-part parliamentary group on housing and care for the elderly, with the Demos think-tank, argued that the recommendations would free-up 4.3m family homes, easing housing market pressure on young families.
