SEGRO competes to host Heathrow Airport logistics hub

SEGRO’s East Midlands Gateway logistics park is bidding to be one of the four Heathrow Airport logistics hubs across the UK.

After the positive vote by parliament for Heathrow’s expansion, a delegation from the airport management visited the 30.4m sq ft site as part of a tour of 65 locations under consideration.

As part of the tour, Heathrow’s representatives were looking for sites that will be able to work together to pre-assemble components before transporting them to the Heathrow site.

The logistics hubs, which feature in the government’s Industrial Strategy, are expected to encourage job creation and economic growth.

Segro is bidding along with its partners at North West Leicestershire District Council.

Andrew Pilsworth, SEGRO’s national logistics business unit director, said: “Working in collaboration with our local partners, we believe we have made a very strong case for East Midlands Gateway to be one of the Heathrow logistics hubs.

“The site not only offers unrivalled scale and connectivity, but businesses based here can draw on a strong manufacturing skills base, a talented pipeline from six universities and a huge potential workforce across the nearby cities of Leicester, Nottingham and Derby.”
