Individual homeowners outdid the big housebuilders last year in the number of residential properties built, research from Savills shows.
More than 15,300 individuals built their own properties. Barratt completed 11,171, Taylor Wimpey, 10,180 and Persimmon, 9,360. The findings prompted calls for more bank support for the self-build sector. Data Monitor says money lent to self-builders annually is expected to rise from £800m to £1.9bn over the next three years. Councils will be required to make more land available for self-build in a move to transform the sector into mainstream option.
