Selfridges sells Glasgow site

Selfridges has sold a three-acre site at Glasgow’s Merchant City to a joint venture between Mace and Mercer Real Estate known as Candleriggs.

The derelict site, located in the Trongate area of the city centre, has been sold for an undisclosed sum.

Selfridges bought the site in 2002 and had planned to build a £90m, 200,000 sq ft department store, close to the prime retail pitch of Buchanan Street and Argyle Street.

However, plans were shelved following demolition work at the site. Other sales have been mooted over the years, most recently to Frogmore.

The new owners are currently working up plans for the site, which could include retail and residential uses.

JLL advised Selfridges.
