People selling properties should be responsible for paying the stamp duty on them, according to the Yorkshire Building Society.
With the rise in house prices, more and more first-time buyers are unable to find properties priced below £125,000, the threshold for stamp duty.
Research by the building society suggests that the move to sellers paying the tax would result in a 16,000 jump in the number of deals in the year after the change, of which 6,000 would involve first-time buyers.
