Sellers should pay stamp duty

People selling properties should be responsible for paying the stamp duty on them, according to the Yorkshire Building Society.

With the rise in house prices, more and more first-time buyers are unable to find properties priced below £125,000, the threshold for stamp duty.

Research by the building society suggests that the move to sellers paying the tax would result in a 16,000 jump in the number of deals in the year after the change, of which 6,000 would involve first-time buyers.
