Selly Oak student scheme set to be sanctioned

Galliard Homes and development and investment firm Apsley House Capital are gearing up to receive planning consent from Birmingham City Council for the redevelopment of Selly Oak’s former Sainsbury’s site into a student accommodation scheme.

The jv acquired the 143,000 sq ft site in April 2023, with the potential to build a £163m GDV development providing up to 850 student beds.

Galliard and Apsley plan to revitalise the site with two PBSA blocks of four and six storeys in height. They will provide 472 self-contained studio rooms and 364 en suite rooms which are arranged in clusters of four to eight bedrooms. The proposals also include student amenities such as a gym, cinema, study room, wellness area and lounge.

The scheme, which has been recommended for approval by the council’s planning officers, also includes 26,000 sq ft of commercial space, a community medical centre, 472 cycle parking spaces and 31 car parking spaces.

Birmingham City Council will discuss the scheme in a planning meeting next week.
