Shared production option could save Longbridge

The future of Rover’s Longbridge plant could be assured when BMW decides this month whether to develop a new small car there.

The new 2 Series could share the facilities used to manufacture models to replace Rover’s 200 and 400 models at the Birmingham plant. The production of several models could give the company the economies of scale needed to keep Longbridge open.

Rover said BMW was close to making a formal subsidy proposal for the plant to the government. It dismissed speculation about closure.
