Sheffield city region will not be getting an elected mayor this year after a high court ruling found there was a need for greater consultation.
The city region was due to hold an election in May. However, in a statement, the Sheffield City Region Combined Authority said it was now working towards a mayoral election in May 2018. The decision follows a legal claim from Derbyshire County Council that the city region’s consultation on its devolution deal was misleading.
A combined authority spokesman said: “On 9-10 November 2016, the case was considered at the High Court in London. The judgement confirmed that Sheffield city region’s extensive and wide-ranging consultation would not be quashed. However, the judgement did raise the need to carry out further consultation to address the proposed governance changes in Chesterfield.”
Local leaders have subsequently decided to defer the election to allow time for the additional consultation required.
