Sheffield One airs city centre retail quarter designs

British Land, Hammerson UK and the Multi-Development Corporation have each unveiled proposals for a new shopping quarter in Sheffield’s city centre.

The trio are the final companies shortlisted as potential development partners for the regeneration of the city centre by Sheffield One – a partnership between Sheffield city council, Yorkshire Forward and English Partnerships.

A public exhibition took place this week showcasing conceptual designs rather than firm proposals. The designs were attributed to Team A, Team B and Team C to prevent company names influencing the public’s response.

The complex and long-term city centre project comprises a new retail quarter extending from Barkers Pool to Pinstone Street and the top of the Moor, and includes a much-expanded Cole Brothers at its hub. The developers will be judged on a range of criteria, including their ability to attract big retail names not present in the city centre.

The preferred developer will be chosen in early September and will then have to work up detailed proposals and financing for the project, as well as working with existing landowners and occupiers.

Alison Nimmo, chief executive of Sheffield One, said: “We are aiming to develop the next generation of city centre retailing so we are looking for a partner with outstanding creative and commercial flair. The new quarter will make a huge impact on the regeneration of the city centre, bringing new jobs and prosperity, and putting Sheffield at the forefront of retailing in the UK.”
