Sheffield’s Yorkshire Bank Chambers to become arts venue

The former Yorkshire Bank Chambers in Sheffield’s Fitzalan Square will be transformed into a new arts and cultural venue.

The 10,689 sq ft Grade II listed building building was sold on behalf of LPA receivers to local art collective S1 for over £600,000.

The building, located at the corner of Commercial Street and Haymarket, has stood vacant since 2017.

The renovated site will feature public galleries across two floors. It will include artist studios, a community and events space, a research centre, a shop profiling local artists and makers, and an independent bar.

Next steps include detailed planning and design work. The new development will contribute to the wider regeneration of Castlegate.

Louise Hutchinson, project director at S1 Artspace, said: “Like many cultural venues in Sheffield, S1 has faced challenges operating within the commercial rental market.

“Securing our own premises is an achievement that allows us to move forward and establish a space that places artistic practice firmly at its core.”

Oliver Coppard, South Yorkshire’s mayor, said: “The cultural arts and heritage sector alone generates £100m each year for South Yorkshire – a huge contribution to our economy.

“S1 Artspace’s plan to create a new arts and cultural venue is an example of the level of our ambition in South Yorkshire.”

Eddisons acted on behalf of the vendors.
