Shell unveils plans for major revamp of London headquarters

Oil giant Shell has unveiled plans for a major revamp of its headquarters on London’s South Bank.

The company has launched a consultation that could see the transformation of 32,515 sq m (350,000 sq ft) of space at its 36 year old headquarters near Waterloo station. The move is the company’s response to criticism that the Shell Centre is a blight on an area that has seen massive regeneration, including the conversion of the old County Hall to luxury flats, the new Eurostar terminal and the Millenium Wheel.

Shell plans a multiplex cinema, health and fitness club, supermarket and a range of non-food and restaurant facilities on three floors of the Shell Centre. The company will continue to occupy 51,095 sq m (550,000 sq. ft) on the upper floors of the building.

Improved access is expected to be a key component of the development.

Shell may also develop a currently empty site on nearby Chicheley Street. A 13,935 sq m (150,000 sq ft) development containing a mix of residential, hotel or commercial space is possible.

The announcement comes in the wake of several major disposals of Shell properties in central London. The group last month agreed to sell part of the London Shell Centre downstream office complex to Galliard Homes for an estimated at £20m. The 146,185 sq m (265,000 sq ft) area will be converted into flats for residential use.

New York property developer Steven Witkoff is about to buy Shell-Mex House -one of London’s best known buildings for over £163m.
