Shopper numbers edged up in May, but total numbers are still significantly below pre-pandemic levels.
Total UK footfall edged up 0.6% last month according to the BRC-Sensormatic IQ report. However, May’s figure was still 12.5% lower than the same month in 2019.
Retail parks, which had weathered the pandemic better than other locations, experienced a 2.6% drop on April’s figures, leaving them 6.3% lower than May 2019.
Helen Dickinson, chief executive of the British Retail Consortium, said customer totals had advanced by small measures as a result of the warm weather in May, while the anticipation for the jubilee celebrations had “offered an added boost”.
However, she added: “As inflation continues to climb and consumer confidence falls, it is by no means certain that footfall will continue to improve in the months to come.”
