Shoppers ease financial gloom in US

US retail sales grew at their fastest pace in four months in July, helping to assuage fears that the economy is heading for a downturn.
American shoppers increased their spending by 0.7 per cent last month, up from a 0.3 per cent rise in June and higher than the 0.3 per cent forecast by analysts. It was the fifth consecutive month of rising sales.
