Sir David Garrard asks to be taken off nomination list

Sir David Garrard has asked Tony Blair to halt his nomination for a peerage in light of the loans-for-peerages allegations that are under investigation by both Labour and the Electoral Commission.

A spokesman for Sir David, one of three business backers who lent a reported £3.5m to Labour last year, said he had made the loan “on commercial terms” and that he was told he was nominated for a peerage for his lifelong commitment to “child welfare and education” as well as his “vigorous support” of government education policy.

Sir David was “disappointed” the list of nominations had been leaked and that the appointments commission had not been in contact with him to clarify any issues.
