The government has awarded preferred bidder status on a PFI contract to rebuild St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London hospitals to Skanska Innisfree.
Barts, in the City of London, will become an advanced cancer and cardiac unit. The Royal London, in Whitechapel, will be rebuilt as an 18-floor general hospital.
The government dismissed a allegations of a conflict of interest because of a close personal relationship between Barts and the London NHS trust and senior employees of the Innisfree subsidiary that will run the new facilities.
