Skyscraper completions hit new high

A record number of skyscrapers were completed worldwide in 2017, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

More buildings of 200m or taller were completed in 2017 than in any other year, with a total of 144 topping out, marking the fourth consecutive record-breaking year, according to the CTBUH’s 2017 Tall buildings Year in Review report.

As expected, much of the growth in tall buildings was in the Far East, with China way out ahead. The city of Shenzhen, directly north of Hong Kong in mainland China, saw a total of 12 towers of 200m or taller complete. This compares with just 10 completions in the whole of the US.

2017 was also the most diverse geographically, with 69 cities globally recording at least one skyscraper completion, up from 54 the previous year.
