Skyscraper construction soars

There are now more than 1,000 buildings that are more than 200m (656ft) tall around the world after a record number of skyscrapers were completed last year, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

A total of 106 200m-plus towers were completed in 2015, exceeding the previous record of 99 completions set in 2014.

The skyscraper construction boom, which has been led by China, has seen a 292% increase in buildings more than 200m since 2000, when only 265 existed globally.

Asia accounted for 76% of the 200m-plus towers completed last year.

Super tall buildings – those taller than 300m (984ft) – also recorded a record year in 2015 with 13 completions, up from the previous record of 11 in 2014.

The number of super tall buildings now stands at 100 globally, double the number that existed five years ago.

The tallest building to complete in 2015 was Shanghai Tower, the tallest building in China and the second-tallest in the world at 632m (2,074ft).

New York’s 432 Park Avenue was the second-tallest completion of the year and is now the world’s tallest residential tower.
