Slump fears divide Bank of England over need to raise interest rates

The Bank of England’s monetary policy committee is heading for its first serious disagreement on interest rates as members balance the competitive pressures of a strong pound and a strongly growing economy.

Economists are beginning to warn Chancellor Gordon Brown of a sharp downturn in 18 months.
