Smart steps for retailers

Mobile phone provider Telefonica launched new technology at MAPIC today designed to help retailers measure shopper’s movements.

Smart Steps from Telefonica Dynamic Insights uses the 02 phone network to build up a picture of people’s movements in the UK.

It shows how many people visit an area by time, gender and age and can analyse movements of crowds by day, week or months.
The technology is being trialled by 12 major retailers over the next three months.

Telefonica Dynamic Insights chief executive Steve Alder says retailers can use the technology to understand footfall across their estate, determine the best locations and formats for new stores and measure the impact of marketing activity on footfall. “I think retailers are our prime target for Smart Steps, to help understanding of where customers are going, where the hot spots are and what the trends are in movements of people,” he said.

We also think Smart Steps will be a fantastic tool for councils. Councils who are trying to revitalize their high streets and may want to understand the effect of parking charges, late shopping or farmers markets and get an idea of what movement of traffic occurs because of those strategies.”
