Smithfield Market to get creative hub backed by Sir Paul Smith

London-based social enterprise Projekt has unveiled a 27,000 sq ft creative hub in Smithfield Market, which will provide space for creative businesses and host a fashion residency backed by designer Sir Paul Smith.

The new hub at the City of London-owned market is the first stage of an initiative to stimulate the growth of the creative industries in London’s central Square Mile. Designed by Projekt, it is located above the meat market in Smithfield’s north-west quadrant. Plans are also being considered for the future of the east and west market buildings.

The hub will also provide 5,000 sq ft of temporary workspace for upcoming designers through the Smithfield Fashion Residency Programme. This programme is being delivered by the mayor of London, Projekt and Paul Smith’s Foundation, with support from the City of London Corporation.

Over the next three years, three cohorts of six fashion designers will receive a free 400 sq ft studio space for 12 months each, as well as mentoring from industry leaders and business planning training.

The mayor of London and Projekt have funded the six creative studios for use by the fashion residents, each investing £175,000 to cover the rent and fit-out of the spaces. As well as mentoring and their own private studio, residents will also have access to wider facilities including a media suite, events spaces, and a photography studio.

Paul Smith’s Foundation has designed the mentoring programme, which is also supported by British GQ. Applications are now open for the first cohort.
