Social: Olympic dream closer to fruition

Trevor-Thomson-in-action-

Aspiring Olympic kayaker Trevor Thomson’s quest to compete at Tokyo 2020 has been helped by sponsorship from London developer Fruition Properties.

Currently ranked third in the world, Thomson holds the K2 200m under-18 championship title and has won silver and bronze for Team GB.

The sponsorship will help towards the costs of the 18-year-old’s equipment and training kit, plus his attendance at training camps in pursuit of his sporting goals.

Mani Khiroya, managing director of Fruition Properties, said: “British sport is now firmly in the limelight following our second place overall ranking in Rio, with Liam Heath, who won gold and silver medals at Rio 2016 and is now Britain’s most successful Olympic athlete in this field, leading the way in the kayaking disciplines.
“We are delighted to help support Trevor, a promising young talent, and we look forward to following his journey to Tokyo 2020 and the 2024 Olympics.”

C&W surpasses charity target

Cushman & Wakefield has surpassed its pledge of raising £150,000 to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Over the past three years, staff at offices across the UK have helped raise £247,000 through activities including hiking the Himalayas and Kilimanjaro, cycling the length of the UK, baking cakes and competing at quiz nights. The charity was also the nominated beneficiary charity for the BCO 2016 annual conference, and the total included funds raised at this event.

Cushman & Wakefield has also provided practical support to the charity by donating meeting space at their Old Broad Street office in the City when required.

Colin Wilson, Cushman & Wakefield’s head of UK & Ireland, said: “We set out to support a charity where the impact of raising £150,000 over three years would make a real difference. Teenage Cancer Trust has a real impact on those it seeks to support.

“Staff chose the charity, and the fact that their cancer units are in the same cities as our offices has ensured everyone really got behind the cause.

“Surpassing our original target will enable the charity to help those it serves just that little bit more. A massive thank you to everyone who contributed and took part.”

Rebuilding the ark

The Beyond Boundaries partnership, a social mobility initiative, launched the Living Ark Structure project on 31 August at Somerford Grove Adventure Playground in Tottenham, N17.

Hosted by local MP David Lammy, the project was delivered with youth charity Risk Agency and the help of more than 20 local volunteers. Over the summer, volunteers repurposed and rebuilt the ark structure, which started life as an eco-classroom. It has now been transformed into a play and performance space to benefit hundreds of local children in an area of deprivation.

Beyond Boundaries’ aim is to build skills and increase opportunities for young people living around Tottenham’s Northumberland Park, and create future pathways into education and employment.

The partnership was formed by architects HTA Design and regeneration consultants Newman Francis to work with children throughout their school careers.

Foodbank support for Swindon

Francis George Solicitor Advocate is set to help local members of the community in Swindon who are in need.
The law firm has made its office available as a regular contribution point for the Swindon Foodbank. This follows the success of the Christmas foodbank point the firm hosted last Christmas and the collection of one tonne of food donated so far this year.

Francis George, founder of Francis George Solicitor Advocate, said: “We are huge supporters of Swindon Foodbank and all it does for the town. Like so many towns that are prosperous on the surface, Swindon has many people who need our help.

“As a local business, we want to play our part in helping the less fortunate among us.”
