Solicitors dealing with property purchases targeted in fraud

Solicitors are being targeted in a sophisticated fraud related to property transactions that may have cost the industry £50m.

The fraud involves getting solicitors to change the account into which they are paying funds for house purchases. As well as identity fraud, other techniques involved include hacking, malware and spear-phishing.

The fraud generally takes place on a Friday afternoon, a busy time for solicitors.
