Somerfield and Kwik Save merger creates 200 spare stores

More than 200 stores will be surplus to requirements if a mergerbetween Somerfield and Kwik Save goes ahead. The two supermarket chainsare in talks about a possible deal.

Kwik Save’s head office in Prestatyn, North Wales, would be the firstcasualty of a combined operation. The merger would eliminate the KwikSave name from most high streets, leaving 1,500 Somerfield stores beforeany future rationalisation.

Somerfield has almost 600 stores, while Kwik Save has about 900.
