Southampton City Council rebrands its central business district

Leader of Southampton City Council Christopher Hammond revealed at EG’s Southampton Question Time that the 136-acre central business district was to be rebranded as the Mayflower Quarter, after the ship that transported the Pilgrim Fathers to the Americas, as part of its masterplan to regenerate the city centre.

The quarter will stretch from the north of the railway station, including Nelson Gate, down toMayflower Park and Royal Pier, where two Far Eastern investors are understood to be interested and talking about driving forward the stalled £450m-plus project.

“The Mayflower Quarter is going to give us a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring forward that mixed-use development,” said Hammond.

He added that the council had also prioritised two other sites, at the Bitterne Precinct and Lords Hill District Centre, and were looking for partners to help them develop the sites and improve the areas.
