The West Quay shopping centre (pictured) in Southampton has won the British Council of Shopping Centres’ (BCSC) 2001 award for the best new shopping centre.
The announcement was made last night at the BCSC’s annual dinner in London.
West Quay, which is owned by Hammerson and Barclays Bank, was cited by judges as a “superb example of urban regeneration”.
Nigel Woolner, chairman of the BCSC Awards Panel, said: “West Quay successfully integrates 800,000 sq ft of new retail floor space into the heart of Southampton and has become the regions premier shopping destination.”
The Chimes in Uxbridge and Gunwharf Quays in Portsmouthboth won commendations in the new centre category. The Bridges in Sunderland and The Capitol Centre in Cardiff won commendations in the refurbishment and extension category.
This is the 16th year that the BCSC has presented the awards.
